From A Shed: Empire-Style Silk Crib

06Aug10

Treasures can still be found in Ireland outside of auctions or overpriced flea markets.

Countess Ann Bernstorff, an avid collector of historic textiles, fashion and toys in County Wexford, Ireland, found this beautiful silk Empire-style baby crib in Western Ireland. The owner of the crib had kept it in an old shed, turned upside down, apparently unaware of what he had in his possession.

I was drawn to photograph the crib in part due to the striking mise-en-scene: The light blue plays against the burgundy red and emphasized by the oval mirror above.

This continues my Napoleonic summer that has included Biarritz, where Napoleon III’s wife, Empress Eugenie had a summer retreat, and Elba Island, where Napoleon I spent a brief exile before his final defeat in Waterloo.
